Photo Memoir
The First Exchange Experience
By: Tais Canto
When you are a child and you see all these incredible places all around the world, all that you want to do is go to these places and visit them. Well, at least it was all that I wanted to do, I really believed that one day I would make this happen.
But to achieve a dream, no matter what it is, everyone knows that it is not something easy to do. First of all, I had to take english lessons for one year, and it was not easy at all. I had school all day, and at night I had to go back to school to learn english. This year, I had to take a english exam that would give me a unique opportunity: a scholarship to come to Canada! It was hard, but I studied for it for a long time, and I gave my best, so as a result of my effort, I had a good mark. Then, I was sure that I would live in somewhere outside my country for five months.
It was the beginning of my first exchange to a place where I would be far away from my family, home and all my friends, a place where I did not know what I should expect of, a place where I did not know what was going to happen and everything new that I would experience. But also, the beginning of the most important accomplishment in my life.
So, after this, all I did was to fill all my documents, go to meetings and wait til September 2nd, finally the day of my flight to Winnipeg. I had three flights, almost twenty hours, and even that I was really tired, I was feeling happy and excited for being here.
I miss that feeling of expecting everything that would happen later, meeting my host family, knowing Canada, that feeling of anxiety but at the same time, happiness. I was thinking about how this is important for me, everything that I would still experience and everything that I`ve been throught to be in here, and even that it was hard, it has shown me that nothing is impossible as long as you go after it.
